Can We switch any Medicare Plan After Enrollment?

The good news is that, with the complexity of Medicare alternatives, you have the freedom to change plans in specific situations. Medicare has specific enrollment times so that you can make changes according on your changing needs, even if you cannot just switch plans at any time of the year. Below is a summary of the important times to remember:

Period of Enrollment Each Year (AEP)

This is your best chance to modify your existing Medicare plan, and it runs from October 15 to December 7 of each year. In this time frame, you can:

  • Change to a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) from Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
  • Change your Medicare Advantage Plan of choice
  • If you haven’t already, sign up for a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.
Get out of your Part D plan.

Period of Open Enrollment (OEP)

The Open Enrollment Period, which is shorter than the AEP, is from January 1 to March 31. During this time, you can modify certain aspects of your existing Medicare Advantage Plan, such as:

Changing your Medicare Advantage Plan (if you have one) to another
Important Information: Changing from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage Plans is not allowed with the OEP. For that option, you will have to wait for the AEP.

Periods of Special Elections (SEPs)

There are certain variations from the usual enrollment schedules during these times. But in order to be eligible for a SEP, you must meet certain requirements that affect your medical status. These situations could consist of:
Relocating to a new home outside the service area of your existing plan
Gaining or losing health insurance provided by your work

  • Gaining or losing health insurance provided by your work
  • Noticing an important shift in your medical requirements
  • Removal from a Medicare Advantage Plan for non-medical reasons

Examine Your Options

You have the option to transfer to an entirely new Medicare plan provided by any participating insurance provider. This enables you to investigate plans that might offer greater coverage, more affordable premiums, or networks that are more compatible with the physicians and hospitals of your choice.
